Structural Design for Zats Residence

Location: Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Client: Boris Zats
DOP Engineering was chosen for the Structural Design of the Zats Residence due to our expertise in the field. The client needed a team to design the structure for his residence in Fort Lauderdale, and he knew that we were the right fit for the job. We eagerly accepted the challenge and worked collaboratively to bring his vision to life.
Although the Zats Residence project featured typical CMU walls and concrete columns, our team implemented unique elements to ensure the building’s structural integrity. One of these was the Hambro system on the second floor, a composite floor system consisting of open web steel joists embedded in a concrete slab. Our team designed the connections to the wall and beams for this system.
In addition, we provided calculations and designed the composite beams on the roof. We used new software to check the load results for these steel beams, which had a reinforced slab cast over them with shear connectors.
Despite its seemingly simple appearance, the Zats Residence project was quite complex due to its unique structural elements. Our team had to develop a deep understanding of the various components and their interactions to provide effective solutions. We worked closely with a specialty engineer to resolve the issue of helical piles (foundations). Through thorough research and innovative approaches, we were able to overcome challenges and ensure the project’s success.
This project has been an exciting experience for our team, demonstrating our expertise in structural design and our commitment to using innovative approaches and technologies. We are proud to have delivered the best possible results for our clients, ensuring that the finished home has a structurally sound and efficient system that meets their needs and expectations.

Rooftop Mechanical Equipment Attachment

Project Type: Mechanical Equipment Attachment
Location: Miami, Florida
Client: Private
DOP Engineering was hired to provide structural design and documentation for a rooftop mechanical equipment attachment in a shopping plaza. The client, a pharmacy owner, needed to securely install a generator on the existing concrete roof.
Scope of Work
Our engineers developed drawings and calculations for:
- A structural curb system for the mechanical equipment attachment.
- Openings in the slab for required ductwork.
- A new aluminum guardrail system around the perimeter.
Design Considerations
All structural solutions were designed to meet the 2023 Florida Building Code. This included addressing wind loads, fall protection, and ensuring adequate support over double-tee concrete systems to maintain rooftop safety and code compliance.
Key Features
- Curb design and anchor layout to secure the unit.
- Integration with existing structural elements.
- Lightweight aluminum guardrails.
- Built-in corrosion protection and durability.
This project highlights DOP Engineering’s ability to deliver tailored solutions, combining safety, code compliance, and long-term reliability.
